“It is the first time I have had contact with this product, even though they have used my image”. The media chef Alberto Chicote, presenter of television programs, denounced this Tuesday through an episode dedicated to dangerous diets that a food supplement designed to lose weight used his image, illegally and fraudulently, taking advantage of an alleged interview in which, appropriating the identity of the chef, it was stated that Chicote would have lost 12 kilos in a month when he started taking Reduslim, and all this “without resorting to doctors or trainers, and without spending a lot of money”. Nothing could be further from the truth, because this same Sunday, during his visit to Nuria Roca’s program, Chicote told that he had lost 40 kilos in a healthy way over a year and a half by eating better and exercising regularly. The pills that are hidden behind that false interview to Chicote, entitled ‘Alberto Chicote has been sued for divulging the secret to lose weight’ (sic) and that has been brought before the Consumer section of the National Police for using the image of the chef, are only marketed ‘online’ under the name of Reduslim, so as they warn from the program of La Sexta, “it is not prescribed by doctors, nor is it available in pharmacies”. In addition, as Chicote himself points out when he got his hands on the product for the first time, a box containing only 10 pills for a minimum price of about 39 euros, there is no indication of who the manufacturer is, and only the origin and distribution of the product, located in Bulgaria, is indicated.
In line with what is explained by the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU), which speaks of this “fashionable slimming” that boasts of “helping to eliminate fat in a natural way”, there are many doubts that arise about this dietary supplement of supposed natural origin. To begin with, the OCU points out that the fact that its composition, which has not been analyzed by this entity, may be based on natural ingredients does not make the supplement a harmless formula. In fact, the organization also emphasizes the marketing of different products made by the same manufacturer under the brand comprare reduslim online and which have a different composition. Caffeine, green tea, pepper, chromium and L-Carnitine are some of the ingredients that the product promotes on its website as part of its composition and that, combined with a low-calorie diet and a healthy lifestyle -which in itself would contribute to improving physical shape-, help to lose weight. Because of their diuretic effect, explain the OCU, caffeine and green tea are common substances associated with the stimulation of metabolism, while L-carnitine, which is involved in processes of obtaining energy from fats, is often used as a ‘fat burner’, a property that has not been scientifically proven, according to the OCU. In any case, these substances are not necessarily the direct cause of weight loss.
On platforms such as Amazon, they add from the entity, you can buy another alleged Reduslim containing glucomannan as the main ingredient, a dietary fiber obtained from a plant of Asian origin and that causes satiety. Those food products that contain 1 gram of glucomannan per serving can carry the EFSA health claim that “helps to lose weight when following a low-calorie diet”, as long as it informs the consumer that a beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of three grams of glucomannan in three doses, together with one or two glasses of water before meals. However, from the OCU, they point out that it is really the hypocaloric diet and exercise the elements that help to lose weight, while from the National Police warn that the hook of getting “lose 12 kilos in a month”, used in the false interview of Chicote, is only achieved with medication and “the most used product to achieve that effect is sibutramine, which is prohibited”.
